Flamenco Romantico
Flamenco is normally thought of as being up-tempo, full of hot-blooded vivacity, power and force. The title Flamenco Romantico (‘Romantic Flamenco’) appears to be a contradiction in itself. In order to achieve a romantic theme I turned to the free forms of the taranta, rondeña as well as the granaina. Apart from that I interpreted faster rhythms, like the bulería more slowly (Buleria lenta, track 11).
In the compositions I was guided by all the themes which constitute a relationship between lovers, such as striving for harmony, longing, love, romantic walks, trust, quarrels and discussions, beauty and much more.
The tracks 1 to 10 were all recorded on solo guitar. There is only ever one guitar audible. This is especially interesting in the zambra (track 6) where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers play Arabian melodies and themes above a repetitive bass line played with the thumb.
